UV printing1 and sublimation printing are both very common full-print methods in custom bag manufacturing today. Both can create strong visual results and are widely used for branded bags and custom graphic designs. However, the two methods still differ in material compatibility and the way the final print looks on the bag.
UV printing works with a much wider range of materials, while sublimation has more specific material requirements. But on suitable polyester fabrics, sublimation usually produces brighter and more natural-looking colors. For custom bags, choosing the right printing method is not simply about which one is better. It depends more on whether the material, design, and actual project needs match the printing process.
The biggest difference between UV printing and sublimation printing2 is whether the color stays on the surface of the material or goes into the material itself. UV printing uses UV light to instantly cure the ink onto the surface, so the design sits on the outer layer of the material. Sublimation printing uses heat to push the dye into polyester fabric, allowing the color to bond with the fibers instead of simply covering the surface.
Because of this difference, the final visual effect and hand feel can also be a little different. UV prints tend to look more surface-based, while sublimation usually creates a more natural color blending effect with a softer overall feel.

One of the biggest advantages of UV printing is its high material compatibility. As long as the material surface can hold the ink properly, most bags can be printed directly without relying on polyester fabrics like sublimation printing does.
Compared to UV printing, sublimation has stricter material requirements. It mainly works on polyester-based materials because the process relies on heat to push the dye into the material itself. Without polyester content, the color cannot properly bond with the fibers. In general, the higher the polyester content, the brighter and more vibrant the final colors will be.
There are now some newer techniques that allow sublimation printing on cotton materials, but the cost is still relatively high. The color consistency and overall stability also usually do not perform as well as full polyester fabrics.
If we are only comparing color performance, sublimation printing usually produces brighter colors with more natural color transitions than UV printing. This is especially noticeable in large full-color graphics, gradients, and photo-style designs, where sublimation tends to create a smoother and more blended color effect.
That said, UV printing can still produce very strong and vibrant colors on many materials. On materials like PVC, TPU, EVA, and Tyvek, UV printing often delivers excellent color results as well. The difference is that on fabric-based materials, sublimation usually has a more noticeable advantage in overall color performance.
The biggest difference in hand feel comes from whether the color stays on the surface of the material or becomes part of the material itself. UV printing places the ink on the surface, so the printed area usually has a slight surface feel. Depending on the print size and ink thickness, it may feel slightly raised or a little firmer to the touch, although the print layer itself is still relatively thin.
Sublimation printing usually feels more natural because the design does not sit obviously on top of the material like UV printing does. The surface almost feels like the original fabric itself, with very little noticeable print layer when touched.
The cost difference between UV printing and sublimation printing mainly comes from the printing process itself. With the same bag material and the same design, sublimation printing is usually slightly cheaper than UV printing. Since UV printing works with a much wider range of bag materials, the printing cost can also vary depending on the material used. For example, UV printing on materials like Tyvek is usually slightly more expensive than on regular fabrics.
In the custom bag industry, the printing method is often not decided by the customer alone. It usually depends on the material, the design, and the budget together. For example, some customers specifically require cotton or natural materials. In that case, sublimation printing is simply not possible, and UV printing becomes the only option.
But if the customer is open to polyester-based materials, sublimation usually has a more obvious advantage, especially for darker or deeper color designs. For designs with dark gray, charcoal gray, or other muted tones, sublimation often produces brighter and more vivid colors. With UV printing, the final result can sometimes look darker than the original artwork, while sublimation usually stays closer to the intended color feel.
So for custom bags, choosing between UV printing and sublimation printing is usually not just about which method is better. It depends more on the material, the color style, and the final visual effect the customer wants to achieve.
