Soft vs Hard Cooler Bags: Structure, Performance & Use Cases

When it comes to custom cooler bags, the most common structures are soft and hard coolers. These two types differ significantly in materials, functions, and usage scenarios.

Here’s a simple overview of the five most common printing methods used for custom cooler bags:

Soft Cooler Bag Features:

Soft cooler bags are typically made with flexible materials such as non-woven fabric, oxford cloth, cotton canvas, Tyvek, or washable kraft paper. The inner insulation often includes EPE foam with aluminum foil or PEVA lining. They are lightweight, foldable, and easy to carry, making them ideal for daily commuting, employee gifts, and short-distance food delivery. Soft coolers also offer excellent print surfaces for branding.

Hard Cooler Bag Features:

Hard coolers are constructed with full plastic shells (like HDPE or PP) and insulated with PU foam. They offer stronger cooling performance and are highly durable under pressure. Hard coolers are suitable for outdoor camping, cold chain logistics, or long-term cold storage. Compared to soft coolers, branding is usually limited to stickers or molded logos.

Recommended Use:

  • For short trips and portable needs: choose soft cooler bags

  • For long-term cooling and heavy-duty use: choose hard cooler bags
